About Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is located in northern Tanzania, within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), near the town of Karatu in the Arusha Region. 🕳️ Formation It is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Formed about 2–3 million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed in on itself. The crater is about 20 km (12 miles) wide, covering an area of around 260 square kilometers (100 sq mi). It is approximately 600 meters (2,000 feet) deep from rim to floor. 🐘 Wildlife Home to over 25,000 large animals, including: Lions (notably one of the densest populations in Africa) Elephants Buffalo Endangered black rhinos Wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, hyenas, and countless bird species. 🌱 Environment The crater floor features diverse habitats such as grasslands, swamps, forests, and Lake Magadi, a seasonal soda lake at the center. 🏆 Significance Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Often referred to as a “natural wonder of the world” for its breathtaking scenery and rich wildlife. One of Tanzania’s most famous safari destinations, alongside Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro.
